At the height of 2020, The Amberfox Corporation© reigns unchallenged across the West, and much of Europe, spreading into parts of Africa and South America. A massive corporation, with many sub-divisions in the pharmaceutical industry, military, bioscience and astrophysics, the only competition the corporation faces is from the Japanese-British company based on the island of Okinawa, Irikamá-Nuffield©. The Amberfox Corporation rose to power in the mid 2010's, when Amberfox Pharmaceutical© announced that they had created a viable cure for all cancers, and had carried out thousands of successful treatments on terminal patients, all of whom had recovered swiftly. The cure was shipped across the globe, as patients who had never shown any symptoms were also treated in order to prevent future manifestations of the disease, and those who refused - viewing the rise of the corporation as a potential dictatorship for Western society - were secretly treated during routine vaccinations. Among those behind the creation of the cure, which - after less than three weeks of business - had made the corporation a powerhouse, was Dr. Blackshire, a young immunologist with a talent for herpetology and biochemistry. She was hailed as a hero, after it became known that she was the genius behind the cure's creation. Despite the celebrations that rocked the world, a conspiracy had bloomed in the blackened heart of Amberfox, one that would spell catastrophe for the known world.
At the beginning of 2016, the world's population was a rapidly growing 8.3 billion. The elite of Amberfox, a select few; politicians, lawyers, scientists and corporates alike, gathered in the corporation's headquarters in the now-flooded New York, which had been converted into a submerged metropolis following the melting of the polar ice-caps in late 2014. They decided that a third world war would be a quiet one, and that the world's population was now increasingly unstable, as many areas of habitable land had been reclaimed by the oceans. The Antarctica Accords, a nuclear disarmament treaty signed by all the world's leaders at an emergency summit in Antarctica in 2014, meant that the nuclear option was off the table. It was eventually decided that a terrible pathogen, concealed within the cure for cancer, would be unleashed upon the world. Less than three weeks after the cure had become widespread, reaching the farthest corners of the world, the elite members of The Amberfox Corporation© gathered, and waited. 'Patient Zero', the first to perish from the media-dubbed 'EXAR-58', marked what would be the beginning of the darkest period in human history. The pathogen killed 75% of all those inoculated with the cure, the onset of symptoms triggered with the flick of a switch, satellites directing the unique signals to activate the substance as it coursed through the bloodstream. In a catastrophic period of three months, the death toll had reached 6.3 billion, decimating the population and reducing it down to 2.075 billion, with the disease appearing to grow docile in its tenacity as winter approached, as though it simply blew away with the wind.
